  • William John Bishop was the son of William Henry Bishop and Kate nee Messer. His grandfather was born on board the Timandra whilst the family was enroute to NZ from England in 1842. The Bishops were early settlers of Taranaki. He was born in Hawera, Taranaki 8 October 1895 and was the only son. He saw service at Chunuk Bair, Gallipoli where he was first listed as missing on 8 August 1915 but later found suffering from gunshot wounds. He later served in France and Egypt but was invalided out as unfit and sent back to NZ on 13 January 1917 where he died at his home in Koru on 25 August 1917. Cause of death was TB and/or breathing problems caused on active service, (which sounds very like the effects of gas inhalation).
