      MM. London Gazette 16 August 1917, p8429, Rec No 764. Battallion runner during the whole of the offensive operations leading to the taking of Messines ridge, this runner showed marked courage. He was always the first to volunteer for a dangerous run and his ability to find his way over unknown country on the dark night was extraordinary. Although slightly gassed and twice blown up by a shell, he remained on duty the whole time. AWMM
