  • Ernest Andrews was the son of Mr and Mrs Howard Crofts N. Andrews, Auckland.

Ernest John Howard Andrews embarked with the 6th Reinforcements of the Auckland Mounted Rifles and was part of New Zealand's first period at the Somme in 1916. He was killed in action just months after arriving, on 30th September 1916. It is likely that Andrews was part of the New Zealand group that was given the task of capturing a trench system to the left of the village of Flers. This attack began on 15 September 1916 and culminated in attacks on Grove Alley at the end of the month. Regardless, he died in part of the offensive that has become notorious for its cost in human lives and lack of significant progress ("NZ Battlefields and Memorials of the Western Front" p 46).
