  • Obituary
Major John R. Cowles, M.C., reported killed in action on November 25, was a native of Nelson. He was a member of the Samoan Advance Guard, and as a captain in the Rifle Brigade, served against the Senussi in Egypt prior to going to France. Following service at the front he was stationed at the base for instructional duties, and returned only recently to the front. Major Cowles, who was 32 years of age, was a brother of Lieutenant-Colonel J. A. Cowles, who left New Zealand early this year on his third trip abroad on active service.
