  • Whilst a POW he was made to work in a stone quarry and coal mine.

    He was on the march across Germany for about three months. The Germans couldn't feed them so they marched the prisoners in columns and they stole what they could to eat. Charlie used to tell a story about a farmer who had just planted some potatoes, and at night they went and dug some up to cook.

    Recaptured by the Germans 22 April 1945. AWMM
