BEM. 1949. Towards the end of 1947 an airman from an RNZAF station in Fiji was reported missing and suspected of being in difficulties in a river near the station. Sgt Deibert promptly proceeded to the river and with coolness and foresight organised a search near the missing man's clothing. Finally the missing airman's body was discovered submerged in fifteen feet of cloudy water. Due to native superstition Sergeant Deibert's helpers would not bring the airman's body to the surface. However in spite the fact that he was an indifferent swimmer he unhesitantly dived into the river and with considerable difficulty brought the airman to the surface, struggled to the river bank, where resuscitation was unsuccessfully applied in an effort to save the airman's life. Sergeant Deibert by his exemplary coolness, courage and leadership, found and brought the airman's body ashore at considerable risk to his own safety. AWMM
