  • My Grandfather, Robert Allan Macmillan, left Scotland for New Zealand in about 1908. I understand that he came to establish himself in New Zealand before bringing his wife and three sons to the country. He was a shipbuilder by trade but was called up into the NZEF in 1916 and worked as a farrier. I believe that he saw no active service, but died of influenza two weeks after the war ended. He is buried at Karori cemetery and I was the first member of his family to visit his grave when I visited Wellington in 2013. It was a moving experience.
