  • One of 16 children, he was born in Ireland and raised in the Waikato. He left school and became an apprentice jockey. When war started, he was manpowered into a Box factory, which he hated. He enlisted as soon as he could and went overseas to Italy.

He spent his 21st birthday in Military prison after sorting out a lippy officer.

After the war, he returned to NZ and eventually married. This marriage produced three daughters: Karen, Tracey and Adrienne. He had three granddaughters.

Bluey was an Armoury Information Volunteer in the Auckland War Memorial Museum from 1996 until his death in 2002. AWMM
