"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the 7th August, 1915, during the attack on Chunuk Bair (Dardanelles). While advancing up a narrow gully with precipitous sides, his battalion suddenly came on a strongly defended post, which barred the way, and from which a heavy rifle fire was directed on the head of the column. Sergeant Atkins, getting his section in hand, without hesitation rushed the position, captured and held it. He displayed great bravery and coolness, and set a splendid example to all with him" London Gazette 29 November 1915, p11893 AWMM Queen's South Africa Medal (Cape Colony, Rhodesia, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 clasps) AWMM 1914-1915 Star AWMM British War Medal (1914-1920) AWMM Victory Medal AWMM Training and Enlistment Contribute › Military training Branch Trade Proficiency EnlistmentFarmer/Civilian AWMM AWMM South Africa Unknown AWMM Draper/Civilian AWMM Canterbury, New Zealand AWMM WW1 Unknown AWMM Carpenter/Civilian AWMM Occupation before enlistment Age on enlistment Embarkations Contribute › Embarkation detailsSouth Africa Vessel was Maori AWMM Gunner/Military AWMM New Zealand Mounted Rifles, 5th Contingent (New Zealand Imperial Bushmen), 11 Company (Auckland Section) AWMM New Zealand Mounted Rifles, 5th Contingent (New Zealand Imperial Bushmen) AWMM WW1 16 October 1914 AWMM from Wellington, New Zealand AWMMHMNZT 4 or HMNZT 11 AWMM Vessel was Tahiti or Athenic AWMM Private AWMM Canterbury Infantry Battalion AWMM 2nd Reinforcements AWMM 2nd Embarkation AWMM Prisoner of war Contribute › Capture details Days interned Liberation date Liberation Repatriation POW liberation details POW serial number Medical history Contribute › Medical notesMedical, WWI AWMM 7 August 1915: Wounded at Gallipoli AWMM Medical, WWI AWMM 8 September 1915: Wounded at Gallipoli AWMM Last known rank Contribute › Last rankWW1 10 May 1916 AWMM Wounded AWMM Sergeant AWMM New Zealand Rifle Brigade AWMM Biographical information Biographical information Contribute › Served with 5th, 7th and 9th Contingents in South Africa 1900 to 1902 and Baden Powell Police 1903 to 1904 (Regt No 2341)1916: Married Jessie Louisa MorganChildren: son, Arthur Albert, born 15 January 1917, died 15 January 1917; son, Sydney Arthur, born 11 March 1918, died 11 November 1994; daughter, Frances Joan, born 10 Feburary 1919.At the time of his death he was temporarily attached to permanent Staff._____________________________Arthur Albert Atkins – 1884-1918Arthur was born in Herder in India in 1884.
