    Arthur Albert Atkins – 1884-1918

Arthur was born in Herder in India in 1884. He served in the Boer War with the NZ Rhodesia Field Force Artillery. He sailed in March 1900 for Portuguese East Africa where he served until 1902. At that time he was a single farmer.

In 1914 when he enlisted, he was a draper and living in Christchurch. He won his DCM at Chunuk Bair and was wounded twice at Gallipoli. He returned to NZ in 1916 and was discharged. His rank was now Sergeant-Major and he was attached to Permanent Staff. That same year, he married Jessie Louisa Morgan and they had 3 children. They were in Hokitika in Westland when he died aged 34 in November 1918, three months before the birth of his last child. What a sad end to his life.

Above biography was transcribed, researched and written by Margaret Nash of Panmure Branch of NZSG
