  • His father was James Nugent Copland (goldminer),died in 1887 aged 35 , his mother Grace,Evangeline Thaxter, died 1890, aged 30. Grandfather was Charles Thaxter, died 1898, grandmother was Charlotte Thaxter , died 1891. Had two brothers and one sister. Married Eliza Hannah Courtney in 1910, who died in 1961.

    Had two sons, Cecil John James, born 1910 and Leonard Courtney , born 1911.J.J. Copland had a brother who fought and died in WWI. He was Private William Albert Thaxter Copland, service number 10/1351, 2nd Reinforcments W.I.R. Killed in action at Gallipoli 8 August 1915.

    Occupations: Labourer, marble & granite polisher, linesman, monumental mason

    Name is also spelled as Copeland in some documentation.

  • Have met the wife of the great grandson of JJ Copland and they have a photograph of John wearing his Queen's Medal. The added notes on lower front of photo show he was a gunner linked to 15 pounders.
