  • Member of the New Zealand Alpine Club.

"For fourteen years he was a member of the Executive of The Federated Mountain Clubs and was President for the years 1947-49. As representative of the Federation on the National Parks Authority and member of the Tongariro National Park Board he rendered service of permanent value.

Noel Thomon practised as a barrister and solicitor in Levin and earned a reputation throughout the North Island as a counsel of marked ability and learning. Shortly before the war he took the Master of Laws degree as an incidental activity to his many other interests. He was at one time a member of the Levin Borough Council and when he died was again standing as candidate for election. He went overseas with the 9th Reinforcements and served with the artillery in the Italian theatre. While training at Maadi he spread alarm and despondency among King Farouk's gendarmerie by making a solo attempt up a face of the Great Pyramid. At one time he held the office of President of the Returned Servemen's Association of Levin.

Mr Thomson brought to his duties evidence of a wide knowledge of men and mountains, a virile mind, a complete and absolute sincerity of purpose, wise counsel and a satisfying comradeship - we shall long mourn his passing."
