  • Member of the New Zealand Alpine Club: "Roger joined the Club in 1944 but left New Zealand shortly afterwards for service with the 2nd N.Z.E.F. in Egypt and Italy. He saw further service with the 22nd Battalion when that unit was sent to Japan.

He returned to New Zealand in 1946 and immediately joined in the various activities of Canterbury-Westland Section. He was an enthusiastic helper in the building of the Arthur's Pass and Greenlaw Huts, where his general handiness with tools made him a valued member of parties working on these and other alpine huts.

In 1951 he was elected to the Section Committee and was a natural choice to handle the photographic competition for that year. Photography was always his first choice and he never travelled far without his camera." (from the NZ Alpine Journal, No.49, 1962) AWMM
