      Farmer from Tuakau then a builder in Hamilton.

      Auckland Museum Boer War displays "Saddle and Equipment" containing "the military issue saddle and 80- round horse bandolier" of Trooper Madill, "NZMR" which has a poem by Trooper Madill, knife and spoon, and a Lee Enfield and bayonet belonging to Trooper Madill (NZ Troops on the Veldt display)

    • Excerpt from Penguin (New Zealand) book "New Zealanders at War / Trooper James Madill 6th New Zealand Contingent".

      On 12 November 1901 Trooper James Madill had a lucky escape when his horse went lame on patrol.
      Trooper Madill recorded "Heavy fog, drizzling rain. Towards daylight my horse knocked up altogether and finally she gave up going up a steep kopji (steep rocky out -crop). I was unable to get her up for some time and when I did the Patrol (to which he belonged) was nowhere to be seen and I was left alone with a horse that was not able to drag along properly. Finally I had to shoot her. I put the saddle and bridle in scrub and started after the Patrol on foot which had halted near-by - giving me a chance to catch up. Rained nearly all day and we got 3 prisoners and 6 horses - one if which I rode back to Camp".

      Trooper Madill also recorded that in December 1901 :

      "Terrible thunder storm at 7pm. Stampede of the horses and the mules. One of the miserablist nights on the Veldt. Ground covered with hail - on which we had to lie without any shelter and wet clothes to boot. Had one Ry (railway worker) and 2 Kaffirs killed during the storm.
