The death occurred at the Green lane Hospital, Auckland, yesterday, at the age of 76, of Mr Harry Gordon McMillan, a well-known resident of Rotorua. The late Mr McMillan was prominent in military circles, having been attached to the NZ military permanent staff and having served with the NZ forces in the South African War.
The late Mr McMillan was born in Auckland in 1867. He served in the South African War as a captain, leaving NZ with the 6th Contingent. On returning from South Africa, Mr McMillan was placed in charge of the Scottish Volunteer Mounteds at Waipu. He is especially well known in the Waipu and Whangarei districts.
In 1911 he joined the NZ permanent staff and served on that body in Dunedin, Wellington, Gore and Masterton. In 1928 he retired from military life, and went into hotel business until 1931, after which he lived in retirement. For the last three years he had been living in Rotorua.
Mr McMillan was twice married, his first wife predeceasing him in 1914. He is survived by his widow, two sons of the first marriage, Mr Norman McMillan, of Rotorua, and Mark, overseas, and one son and two daughters of the second marriage.
