  • Member of the New Zealand Alpine Club: "[Arthur Carty's] manner was rather shy and reserved but this hid a keen, very dry sense of humour. In the days when competitions at parties were the vogue, the assembled company was invited to write a limerick on the word "night". Arthur was unanimously judged the winner with the following magnificent effort.

"The best part of day is the night"
The Irishman said, and he's right
    If the sun isn't out
    And the moon's not about
Then you find all you see out of sight"

He held strict views, maintained high standards of ethics, morals and behaviour, and was for many years an active member of the Church of England Synod. Before World War II he was Officer-in-charge at Fort Dorset in Wellington and during the War served in the Western Desert, attaining the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel."
