  • Member of the New Zealand Alpine Club: "Bill Bradshaw was born in 1916 at Wellington, where he received his primary education before going to New Plymouth Boys' High School as a boarder, but in the early depression years he left to assist his parents on their Norfolk Island banana farm. Returning to Wellington on the sale of the farm, Bill caught up on his education at night classes and matriculated at Victoria University College in 1938 to study for a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He was a member of the University and Wellington Swimming Clubs, the University Tramping Club, and the Star Rowing Club, and enlisted in the Wellington Regiment of the Territorial Force. On the outbreak of war he joined the Machine-gun Battalion on 2 NZEF and left New Zealand with the 1st Echelon. With the rank of sergeant he fought in the Greece and Crete campaigns but was captured on Crete and was a prisoner of war until 1945. On release he worked for a large London firm of chartered accountants, completing his commerce degree on his return to New Zealand, and made his career in the profession of accountancy." (from the New Zealand Alpine Journal, 1977) AWMM
