    Obituary: Taranaki Daily News, 11 July 1950

    His obituary notes " Former resident of Patea, prominent in the community for 21 years. Lawyer. Member of the legal section of Army H.Q., Wellington, 1940s. Joined Public Service as a cadet in Auckland. Rejoined Public Service in 1904 after service as volunteer in South Africa. Worked in Magistrates and Supreme Courts in Dunedin. In 1914 transferred to Wellington Office of Public Trust Department, in 1918 was Deputy Public Trustee , Auckland. In 1920 practised privately as a solicitor in Patea till 1941. Involved in Patea R.S.A., St George's Church, Plunket Society. President of the lawn Tennis Club in Patea. AWMM

  • Thomas Roberts was my grandfather. My mother, Shirley Rowe (née Roberts, born in 1911) always spoke very warmly of his compassion and generosity. During the Depression years in Patea, they had very little money, in spite him being a lawyer; his clients in such an impoverished rural centre could not pay, but he continued his practice, and she remembers finding food such as potatoes or pumpkins instead on their doorstep.
