    • Member of the New Zealand Alpine Club:

"As a Scout leader, [Ambrose Banfield] took the boys under his charge tramping over the local foothills. Some of the local trampers, including Arch and Bob Logan, together with Ambrose started the Rangiora Tramping Club. On weekends they romped over Mounts Grey, Karetu, Thomas, Blowhard and Oxford.

Later when Ambrose joined the Canterbury Mountaineering Club he climbed Mount Rolleston with Syd Brookes. Much of his early climbing was done with the Logan brothers and Arthur (Shorty) Lees.

When war was declared in 1939 he served in the artillery as an anti-tank gunner. Ambrose was wounded in action in North Africa, and after leaving hospital he earned his commission in the field returning as a lieutenant after five years of active service."
