"Dr Ian Douglas Auld was born in New Plymouth in 1918 and attended the New Plymouth Boys High School. It was inevitable that Mt Egmont, eventually, would lure Ian to its slopes and summit simply because it was there to be seen and was so close. He had some 50 ascents to his credit. He became a medical student at Otago University and in 1940, about his final year, joined the NZAC (Otago Section). He was a member of the first Climbing School organised by the Club during the Christmas and New Year of 1940-41.

He was appointed to Wellington Public Hospital and then joined the Wellington Section. During World War II he served in the RNZAF as medical officer and was stationed for a while at Bell Block Camp near New Plymouth while Ed Hillary was there being trained a navigator.

In 1947 Ian returned to New Plymouth and set up a practice. When the Taranaki Section was formed, he attended the inaugural meeting on the 21 March 1953 and thus became a foundation member." (from the New Zealand Alpine Journal, 1979) AWMM
