  • Wife of George Glacken.

Details from an interview with Mrs Glacken: Maud Montgomery enlisted with the 2nd contingent of the New Zealand Army Nursing Service on 5 March 1916. She is mentioned in an article in Kai Tiaki entitled "Farewell to Nurses Leaving on Maheno" which left Wellington for Alexandria on 6 May 1916.

On reaching Alexandria, she worked for three months at an English Army Hospital in Alexandria, Egypt before the NZ unit was split up and dispersed (much to the unit's displeasure) on arrival at Nottingham, England in mid 1916.

Maud was then sent to Walton-on-Thames before the Unit was re-assembled and sent to St Omer in France, which at that time was a target for enemy bombing. Maud then went to Amiens before moving on to Abberille were she served in the front line. On return to the UK Maud took charge of a nurses home where NZ nurses were in residence.

In 1917 she was reported to be "a little out of health and in need of a rest" ("While you're away, p 143). Maud was at the Nurses' Convalescent Home at Sandwich.

She returned to NZ on a hospital ship and was in charge of a ward at Narrow Neck Hospital in Auckland before Maud and her sister opened "Cairnhill" Private Hospital in Mountain Road, Auckland. Maud lived in Loch Street, Remuera.

Maud's engagement was announced in Kai Tiaki, April 1926: "Miss Maud Montgomery ARRC, of Auckland, announces her engagement to Mr George F. Glacken of Masterton. Invitations were issued for the 7th April at Remuera".

She married George Glacken in 1927 and lived in Masterton and Tauranga. She was active in church and social affairs. After her husband died she returned to Auckland where she was in charge of the sick bay at Cornwall Hospital Nurses Home for about 9 years. On retirement she was an active member of the Lyceum Club, the Historical Society and the Army Nursing Sisters Association.

Auckland Museum holds Montgomery's medals and nursing badges. AWMM
