Childs which has the following : 'Sunday: Came out in gully at eight for 24 hours rest. Got New Zealand mail and put the day in reading two Guardians which I got, about a dozen times'. (note: The Guardian is a UK newspaper.)

      Joined Bn at Gallipoli, 8 June 1915.
      Admitted to 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 21 July 1915 (enteritis), and transferred same day to No 2 Australian Stationary Hospital, Mudros; to No 1 Stationary Hospital, 3 August 1915; discharged to duty, 6 August 1915.
      Admitted to 16th Casualty Clearing Station, 20 August 1915 (enteritis); embarked on HS 'Caledonian' for England, 20 August 1915; admitted to Duchess of Connaught's Hospital, Taplow, 1 September 1915; transferred to Depot Hospital, Grey Towers, 29 January 1916; discharged to Base Depot, 23 February 1916.

      Proceeded overseas to France, 26 September 1916; joined 2nd Bn, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, in the field, 13 October 1916.

      Detached to Corps School, 13 October 1918.

      Found guilty, Sling Camp, 30 January 1919, of when on Active Service possessing 3 rounds of revolver ammunition, and violently resisting escort: forfeited Acting Stripe and ordered to pay cost of railway warrant (10/10).
      Commenced return to New Zealand from Liverpool on board 'Kia Ora', 27 March 1919; discharged, 6 June 1919.
      Total war service: 4 years 144 days (of which 4 years 22 days were abroad)
