  • A nursing sister based in New Zealand. The uniform relates to Homefront patriotism during the Anglo-Boer War.

A . Calkin is one of the great grandchildren of John and Maryanne Edmonds who were brought to Kerikeri by the CMS in 1833. John had connections with the stone store. John Edmonds son Arthur married Erana Kareariki and their daughter Ruiha married Samuel Calkin.

The Ngapuhi Nursing Sisters was an organisation of Maori women descended from Ngapuhi chiefs. The sisters received instruction on ambulance work and treating wounded in the field of battle. They wore the Mounted Corps of New Zealand uniform, the same as worn by the country’s soldiers in South Africa during the Boer War. AWMM
