      Samuel Alexander Grant -1879-1915

In February 1901, Samuel was one of 30 men considered competent horsemen to join the group bound for the Boer war. They were provided with Auckland made saddles. As a Lieutenant, Sammy as he was called first left NZ in April 1901 for Africa where he served for 2 years. On his return to NZ he served in the Regular force and went to England for training in musketry and machine gunnery in 1909. In April 1915 he left for Suez and went to Gallipoli and on August 6th he was seriously wounded while rallying his men who were under heavy fire. He was put on a hospital ship where he died of his wounds on 11th August.

In December 1915 it was reported in the Oamaru Mail that his estate was worth £1323.

Above biography was transcribed, researched and written by Margaret Nash of Panmure Branch of NZSG

  • Major Samuel Alexander Grant was my Great Great Uncle, Mum's Father, Jack Grant's, Uncle. Growing up I heard stories from my Grand Father about the magnificent deed carried out by Uncle Sam, (as we called him), on the 7th August, 1915, leading the attack of the Auckland Infantry Battalion at Chunuk Bair. I have a copy of the full length photo of the head shot above, the original photo, the MiD certificate, and other items were donated to the Waiouru Military Museum by Mums Brother, Jack Grant. I also have copies of his MiD certificate, his Dress Sword and belt buckle and other items from the Boer War Uncle brought back with him. Last year by sheer chance, I purchased Uncle Sam's named miniature Boer War Medal, and First World War Medals, including the MiD Laurel Leaf. I believe what Uncle did that day and the sacrifice he and others made should never be forgotten. Lest We Forget.
