      Surname is recorded as Matthews in Nominal Roll of Sixth Contingent, as Mathews in Archives New Zealand

      Drowned, Body Never Found

      Father was named Samuel Matthews. AWMM
    • Son of Samuel Mathews (1839-1909) and Catherine Jones (died 1927), one of eight children born between 1879 and 1894. Two brothers, Thomas and Samuel served in WW1 but were both badly wounded, both returning to NZ after recovering. Samuel died in 1924 from results of war wounds.
