  • Cyril Cromar was the son of William and Anne Cromar, of Dunedin, New Zealand.

    Identified as the last NZEF member to die at German hands in WW1,

    On the 7th February 1919, he and another soldier were with two women on the bank of the Rhine in Cologne when they were accosted by a gang of about 10 young German men

    Cromar became involved in an altercation in which he was shot and mortally wounded

    The murderer, Franz Swobada, who fled the scene, was later tried in a court in July 1919. In 1929 his death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.

    Apparently at the end of the war, some male inhabitants of Cologne reacted badly, harassing women who consorted with the occupiers. AWMM
