  • Son of Charles Edward and Joan Levien. Brother of John Julian Levien (11/75) and Arthur Edward Levien (17517)

Edward Levien enlisted soon after war broke out, with his brother, John Julian Levien (11/75). Both served with the Wellington Mounted Rifles, Edward is recorded as a Sergeant on the Nominal Roll and as Sergeant Major by the family and John Julian as a Trooper. Both trained in Egypt and went on to Gallipoli with their unit. John Julian was killed in action at Gallipoli within months of arriving, on 27 August 1915, aged 20.

Edward was also wounded at Gallipoli - just days before his brother's death - on August 9 1915. After recovering, he was promoted to Second Lieutenant (21 October 1915).

That Edward continued to serve his country well is made clear in the various awards and mentions he received. He was mentioned in A. J. Murray's despatch dated 28 June 1917 and was subsequently awarded a Military Cross, which was reported in the London Gazette on 1 January 1918: Shortly after receiving this honour, Edward Levien returned to New Zealand; he is recorded as embarking a second time, with the 41st reinforcements of the Wellington Mounted Rifles, which left New Zealand on October 10, 1918. This time, he embarked as Captain and on March 17, 1919, he was promoted Major.

Edward served until the end of the war and was discharged on September 7 1919.

In WW2 served in New Zealand as Captain (temp) 1st August 1941 with the Otorohanga Battalion.

Served as Captain with the Otorohanga Battalion Home Guard. Attested 1942 and resigned this commission on appointment to the Territorial Force 24 June 1942. Struck off the strength of Territorial Force 8 September 1942, posted to the Reserve of Officers at Wellington 8 September 1943, posted to retired list on 1 November 1956

Moeraki then transhipped to [HMAT 17]Malta at Sydney for Suez.

Auckland War Memorial Museum Scars on the Heart WWI " Life At Anzac " display. Display item is the battered hat and sunshade of Second Lieutenant Levien.

Part of letter (typescript) written by Arthur G Levien (17517) 25 February 1917 from Moascar Camp to his sister Ruth Guthrie (nee Levien) refers to brother Edward Levien (11/74) and is held on file AWMM
