    • CORPORAL RANGI OTENE, M.M.

A great reception was given on Monday afternoon by the Omaha natives to Corporal Otene. M.M., a member of the First Maori Contingent who awarded a Military meclal for gallantry at Gallipoli on August- 7th. 1915 and was decorated in France by General Plumer. He was also severely wounded in the leg at the Messines battle. He is the first Hawke's Bay Maori to receive this decoration. Speeches of welcome were delivered ov severai speakers, who all heartily welcomed home the wearer of one of His Majesty's coveted honour. In the evening a dance was held in Omahu Meeting House, then speeches, pois. song and a haka by the Tuwharetoas from Taupo were contributed. During the evening a purse of sovereigns was presented by the Omahu Natives, to Corporal R Otene, who suitably responded. Afterwards an adjournment was made to the dining-room, where a sumptuous "spread" was done full justice, after which dancing was again resumed and kept up till 8 a.m. on Tuesday, all having spent a most enjoyable time Public - Lorraine M - Researcher - 8 March 2016 - Hastings Standard, Volume VIII, Issue 28, 16 January 1918, Page 6
