  • Elsie served with the Territorial Service before WW1.

    At the start of WW1 it was initially thought that only one group of nurses from New Zealand would be selected for service overseas. Nurses who did not make this group decided to make their way overseas by other means to serve in the war . Elsie May Cooke embarked for Australia on a New Zealand Troopships for Sydney, and it appears then enlisted with the Australian Army Nursing Service. AWMM
