  • Ronald Bannerman was the son of Agnes Gibson Bannerman and William Bannerman.

Educated at Otago Boy's High School, and studied Law at the University of Otago. Enrolled at the New Zealand Flying School in March 1916.

Took his Flying Certificate at the New Zealand Flying School, Kohimarama, Auckland, New Zealand on a Curtiss Flying Boat, 16 December 1916.

Bannerman flew more than 180 missions during World War One. "Described by his seniors as a 'very daring and skillful leader' he was credited with 17 'kills' during the war, making him the squadron's second best pilot." (Sunday Star Times, June 8, 2003)

During World War Two Bannerman returned to serve the RNZAF in an administrative role. He finished with the rank of Air Commodore.

[ The aerodrome website] provides the following commentary about Bannerman: "A Sopwith Dolphin pilot, Bannerman joined the Royal Flying Corps on 29 March 1917. A barrister and solicitor in Gore, Southland, he served as an Air Member for Personnel in the Royal New Zealand Air Force from 1942 to 1945, attained the rank of Air Commodore and became a CBE.
