Citation: "On 1 December 1943 his regiment was ordered to advance northwards by No 84 road on the left flank of 6 NZ Infantry Brigade attack on Castelfrentano, and to seize the important road junction to the west of that town ... The advance of 18 NZ Armoured Regiment had a direct bearing on the success of 6 NZ Infantry Brigade's capture of Castelfrentano, and cleared the way for the occupation of the ridge to the west of the town ... The example set by Lieutenant Colonel Pleasants has at all times been an inspiration to all concerned." (Haigh & Polaschek, p202) AWMM

      'On the afternoon of 22 May, 1941, near Galatos, Crete, Captain Pleasants personally led a Wellington Company on a raid against a parachutists occupying strong positions on the side of the valley from our lines. The Company was held up by very heavy machine-gun fire. Owing to the intense fire it was impossible to make further progress with the men available. The men endeavoured to outflank the Company, but Captain Pleasants, by great skill and timed judgement, extricated his Company from a most dangerous and exposed positon. During this operation he showed great coolness and bravery in moving about under constant fire, directing the withdrawal. Throughout the whole operation in Crete, Captain Pleasants set a wonderful example of devotion to duty. At all times he carried out his duties under the most adverse circumstances. By his complete disregard of danger, his cheerful demeanour at all times, and his calm acceptance of any situation, he was an inspiration to all ranks.'. (Source: The National Archives.
