His maternal grandfather was the Rev. J. Harding, Wesleyan Minister, for many years in Auckland, Dunedin and Wellington.'Trooper Withers distinguished himself by the capture of three Boers and a commanding officer, a favourite of Kruger's, to whom he (Kruger) had presented a handsome rifle, and who was then carrying important despatches.
