  • Son of William Vere Withers

    Arthur James Withers was the Grandson of the late Major Withers, formerly in command as District Adjutant of Napier. His maternal grandfather was the Rev. J. Harding, Wesleyan Minister, for many years in Auckland, Dunedin and Wellington.

    'Trooper Withers distinguished himself by the capture of three Boers and a commanding officer, a favourite of Kruger's, to whom he (Kruger) had presented a handsome rifle, and who was then carrying important despatches. This rifle was presented to Trooper Withers by General Ridley, Staff Officer.' (St Clair Inglis, p.20)
