  • Lucy(Louisa)Trumble was my Great Grandmother's sister. My youngest daughter Lucy is named for her. When my great grandmother became unwell and died when my grandmother was only two,Aunt Lucy travelled from Australia to Westport where she took over the role of nanny for the girls until their father moved back to Melbourne to his medical practice. The girls were sent to boarding school in Sydney while Lucy stayed on in New Zealand to study midwifery. From there she enlisted in World War One and served in Egypt and military ships as a nurse. Lucy was awarded the Royal Red Cross medal and was mentioned in despatches for her service in the war.Lucy Trumble's medals now reside in the Auckland War Museum .
