  • Before leaving for South Africa Burr was Company-Sergeant-Major of the Wairoa Mounted Rifles, having served in this corps for almost nine years. He was appointed Regimental Sergeant-Major of the First, Second and Third Contingents, and acted as such for seven months in South Africa. When he returned to New Zealand, on the 26 January 1901, he was appointed Staff Sergeant-Major to take charge of the No.1 Mounted Battalion, Wanganui. (St Clair Inglis, p.10)

    He also served with Wellington Mounted Regiment in Egypt.
