  • Gwatkin won his Sergeant's stripes after a year's service in the Canterbury Mounted Rifles.

    He was in the Cape Hospital for five months, being dangerously ill. After he recovered he was appointed Sergeant-Major and Pay Sergeant for the Australian Forces. When the Sixth Contingent went to South Africa Gwatkin volunteered for it, was accepted and given commission and rank of Lieutenant. (St Clair Inglis, p.23)
