  • 'Bunten was engaged in the fight on New Zealand Hill when Sergeant Gourley was killed. After the capture of Pretoria, there were lots of vacancies in the service of the country to be filled, and Private Bunten was given charge of a station on the Rand Railway. He would have willingly kept it, but the New Zealand Government cabled over that the New Zealand men had to return to New Zealand, which caused the authorities to refuse to take on permanently any of the men hailing from New Zealand.'
