  • Lewin was described as being a good horseman, sportsman and soldier, and of having a keen sense of humour. (Stowers, p.166)

    He departed Cape Town aboard the S.S. 'Woolloomooloo' and later joined the 20 Company, 6 NZMR as Corporal. He sailed aboard the S.S 'Cornwall' from Auckland on the 30 January 1901.

    Lewin was promoted to Sergeant-Major and later to Lieutenant.

    He was severely wounded at Swartwater in January 1902 where he'd scraped together a squadron and held a ridge against Botha with splendid gallantry. (Stowers, p.166)

    After the war he started a successful stable business in Pretoria.

    Lewin later moved to Bega (New South Wales) where he engaged in carting timber from bush to railhead, using a steam lorry.
