  • Lockett was present at Kimberley Camp in February 1900. He returned to New Zealand aboard the S.S. 'Harleck Castle' in January 1901.

In April of 1901 Lockett returned to South Africa with the 7 NZMR, 22 Company as Sergeant-Major 4121. He departed from Wellington aboard the S.S. 'Gulf of Turanto'. (Stowers, p.167)

Lockett was severely wounded at Losburg, on the 23 August 1901, and his right arm was amputated 'when against tremendous odds he alone rushed the Boers and with great gallantry rescued a prisoner from them.' (Stowers, p.167). For this action he received the Distinguished Conduct Medal ('London Gazette' 11 October 1901) and was invalided to New Zealand in December 1901.

Father was named John William Lockett. AWMM

  • 12/03/2017 I am the GG Granddaughter of John Lockett. My G Grandfather John William Cruttenden LOCKETT was Ernest's brother. I have an original letter from Ernest's army mates, sent to his father, describing his gallantry when he lost his right arm in the battle. It is more a personal letter/account, rather than the official notification. I will scan the letter and add it to this website when I return to Australia. I will then sent the original letter to the Auckland Museum, where it can be held for all to see if required. Regards Yvonne
