  • Palmer was present at Kimberley Camp in February 1900.

    He departed South Africa as Lance Corporal. He attested twice joining later the 'H' Squadron, South Island Regiment, 8 NZMR and was commissioned as a Lieutenant 15 January 1902. (Stowers, p.173)

    His service record has a note that he was Acting Sergeant with the 1st Contingent and a photograph and letter of recommendation for the commission attest to this role.

    Palmer returned to the Hawera Mounted Rifles after the war.

    Name also written as Sidney on the Service Record. Last rank for the 1st Contingent is written as Corporal; Acting Sergeant on the discharge certificate in the Service Record and as Sergeant
