    • Austen trained at Auckland Hospital and became a Registered Nurse in 1904.
Name is entered on Nominal Rolls as Edith Fane Austen

Nephews Private Bruce Curling Friend (5715) and Captain Lyster Curling Friend (5792) both served in WWII.

Edith Jane Austen was born in Auckland NZ on 21 May 1878 to Martha Jane Sargent (I am a descendant of her), and Captain Arthur Henry Austen. She died on 9 June 1957 – last address 59 Pah Road Epsom Auckland. Edith’s ashes are scattered in the Soldiers Area at Waikumete Cemetery.

      Edith never married.

Edith had six siblings – three brothers and three sisters. Her brothers all became Master Mariners like their father, and only one married, leaving no issue.

Edith trained as a nurse at Auckland Hospital and finished her training in 1904. During WWI, Austen worked as a nurse on the hospital ships H.S. Salta, HMHS Maheno, at the 17th British Gate House, Alexandria and the New Zealand General Hospital, Brockenhurst, England. Postwar Austen worked as a nurse in Kamo, possibly nursing shell shocked soldiers. In the 1920s she was matron at Dilworth School in Auckland. Austen built a house, Lovoni, in Titirangi, Auckland where she retired to nurse a terminally ill nurse and was involved in community nursing and First Aid.

Two of her sisters never married. The only sister who married was Lucy Violet Austen who married a Lionel Curling Friend on 25 May 1912 in Suva Fiji.
During their marriage Lucy and Lionel Friend had three children, two sons – Lyster Curling Friend born 3 November 1913, and Bruce Curling Friend
born 14 March 1915. Their daughter, Shirley Ruve Friend was born on 26 October 1921. AWMM
