  • Smith was present at Kimberley Camp in February 1900.

    After suffering from sunstroke Smith was invalided from Cape Town aboard the S.S. 'Aotea' in June 1900.

    Smith was made Acting Lieutenant of the 3 Waikato Mounted Rifles in March, 1901. He went to England with the Coronation Contingent. (Stowers, p.177)
