James Neil McCarroll – 1873-1951

A native of Belfast Ireland, James McCarroll was farming in the Northland area of NZ. A report in the paper in 1897 has him gaining 2nd prize for a dairy heifer at the Otamatea Agricultural Show. A meeting of the Railways Commission in 1911 discussed the route for the extension of the line to Whangarei. Should it go east or west from a point near McCarrolls Gap? Mr McCarroll gave evidence that there were more animals being moved and as the shipping route was unreliable the train line should be completed as soon as possible.

In 1913 he was living at Maunu in Whangarei when he advertised to sell 30 choice Dairy heifers. When he enlisted in 1914 he was a single farmer aged 41 whose next t of kin was his mother Janie McCarroll of Whangarei.

Stock Sales at Westfield reported in 1921 that Mr James McCarroll of Whangarei sold 18 steers for £8 a head and the price had dropped from prior sales.
In March 1928, the members of 16 Rural Credit Boards were announced. James was one of five men appointed to be a member of the North Auckland Board who could consider and decide on applications for help from the local area.

In 1929 James married Ethel Evelyn Freeman. He died in 1951 in Whangarei aged 78.
