Murray was the son of John and Winifred (nee Courtney) Bennett.

Husband of June Edith Clark. Murray and June had five children.

He attended Mt Albert Grammar School.

After the war he spent a period of three years learning about sheep farming at Manawaru followed and in 1949. With a Rehabilitation loan a farm was purchased in Aicken Road, Paparimu, which would be their home for the next 41 years.

Murray was a member of the Franklin County Council (later Franklin District Council), for 25 years and for 10 of those years as Deputy Chairman. He also served on the Auckland Regional Authority for 9 years from 1974 to 1983, being chairman of the Water Board for 3 years.

Murray was also an Elder at the Brethren Church at Pukekohe, and a member of the Paparimu School Committee. In 1960 Murray and June made available a cottage on their property for use as a camp by the Every Boys Rally, which was a uniformed movement attached to the Open Brethren Church. The first camp was held by Epsom Rally in August 1960 and many other groups also made use of it over the years until 1990 when the property was sold as Murray no longer felt able to carry on with the farm work. During the 1960's a group of senior boys from Tamaki Rally helped paint the inside of the cottage at Paparimu.

Murray and June retired to a town house in the Auckland suburb of St Heliers, where they continued their interest in community affairs by supplying meals to a school in a neighbouring suburb.

A funeral service was held for Murray in Tamaki Community Church, Court Crescent, Tamaki.

His wife June Edith Bennett died 27 April 2010 in Auckland. AWMM
