  • An obituary in the Howick and Pakuranga Times dated 14 October 2003 reads as follows:

"A gun salute rang out from Howick's All Saints' Church on Thursday in rememberance of military and community figure Neville Alan Wallace.

More than 500 people gathered to celebrate the life of their comrade, friend, husband, father and grandfather, and remember Mr Wallace's generous nature and quick wit.

A lawyer and military man involved in numerous comunity organisations, Mr Wallace lived in Whitford with wife, respected Judge Dame Augusta Wallace, for 30 years. He passed away suddenly on October 5, aged 71.

Those gathered at Mr Wallace's funereal received an insight into the private life of the publicly respected man.

They heard of his brave leadership in times of adversity and continual willingness to help others in need.

"My grandad was an incredible man who was always there for me - I will miss your advice and guidance, your help," said grandson James McNeely in tribute to his mentor and friend. "I will miss our talks."

Mr Wallace served on the All Saints' vestry and was involved with many organisations including Ex-Vietnam Services Association, Howick RSA, Agent Orange Trust Board, the National Meningitis Trust, Auckland Club and Auckland Racing Club.

Colin Wallace said his brother showed a propensity for leadership for a young age, demonstarted during their childhood in wartime Cambridge.

Raised in a working class family, Mr Wallace was dux and head prefect at Cambridge High School.

He developed a strong work ethic while paying his way through his first degree at university.

A decorated soldier, Mr Wallace served in Malaya and Vietnam with the New Zealand Army, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

After retiring from service, Mr Wallace completed his legal training, graduating with an LLB.

When wife Augusta was admitted to the judiciary in 1975, Mr Wallace took over her Papatoetoe law practice Wallace & Co, where their daughter Kate was also a partner for many years.

"Neville was a lawyer for the little people of the world," said colleague David Rice.

"He was always ready to listen to people's problems and he was always willing to help them."

Mr Wallace is survived by his wife, daughter and four grandchildren James, Liam, Aidan and Sarah."

2i/c ANZAC Bn. Retired as Lt Col with OBE. Also served with 1 NZ Regt 1957-59 as IO after missing out on selection as a Troop Commander for the original NZSAS Sqn. Served as legal adviser to Vietnam Vets Assn and Trusts for many years. Buried in All Saints Cemetery, Howick, Auckland. Plot 8, Block 4, Row E with wife Dame Augusta Wallace, DBE who died on 12 April 2008.
