  • It is thought that George Colbert was liberated by Yugoslav partisans though this has not been confirmed.

    235 men of the 21 Battalion were captured in Greece and sent to Prisoner of War camps. The Oxford Companion to New Zealand Military History (2000) pages 204 - 209. This covers a synopsis of New Zealand's involvement in Greece in 1941. A large portion of the 21 Battalion were from Auckland but men also were recruited from Waikato, North Auckland and Hauraki districts. The 21 Battalion left NZ embarked in the Empress of Japan and were later transferred to the Empress of Britain at Cape Town. AWMM
