Citation for Military Cross (MC): "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During hostile shelling of his battery position, an ammunition dump in a building was set on fire. This officer rushed in on his own initiative and displayed the greatest gallantry in stifling the flames. As some of the ammunition had already exploded, and the remainder might have done so at any moment, his pluck and devotion to duty cannot be too highly praised.” (London Gazette (online), issue 30466, published on 8 January 1918, p. 606) AWMM

  • Son of Mr and Mrs John Gallie of 17 Stoke St, Wellington, New Zealand.

He first served as Gunner with "D" Battery New Zealand Field Artillery at Samoa from August 1914 to March 1915.

"Among New Zealanders in the Imperial Army who have recently gained the Military Cross is Second-Lieutenant Oscar E. T. Gallie (2/90), son of Mr. John Gallie, of Wellington. The soldier, who is a native of Dunedin, is 26 years of age, and saw service in Samoa for eight months from August, 1914, being the first to join from the Wairarapa. He then went to England and obtained a commission in the Royal Field Artillery. About two months ago the Military Cross was awarded to his younger brother, Lieutenant Victor J. Gallie (2/5), who is in a different division of the Royal Field Artillery. Both young officers are nephews of Major A. R. Hislop, of Wellington." (from an article entitled 'Brothers Win Military Cross', Auckland Weekly News, 11 October 1917, p. 47) AWMM
