Cable advice was received last week by Mr. J. E. Moore, Esplanade Road, Mount Eden, that his eldest son, Captain William Ernest Moore, had been killed in action while superintending his battery. Captain Moore was educated at the Auckland Grammar School, subsequently taking his LL.B. degree at the Auckland University College. He received his legal training in the office of Mr. A[.] Hanna, with whom he remained for eight years. He then practised on his own account. Shortly after the outbreak of war he went to England, and enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery. He received rapid promotion, and, as acting-major, was for four months in charge of his battery. Captain Moore was recently awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous bravery in action. Mr. Moore's other son, Captain A. Tisdall Moore, of the R.A.M.C., is at present in charge of a military hospital at Bristol. Previously he served two years in France and one in Mesopotamia. • Gunner Godfrey Lincoln Lee (1884-1968) recorded on 2 January 1918, in a letter to his first wife (later edited into a typescript of his WWI experience), the following:

"I have just heard of the death in action of W. E. Moore, a well-known Auckland Solicitor. He had distinguished himself as a soldier and been decorated for bravery, and he once paid me the compliment of saying he would like to have me in his office".
