  • Bert was the 2nd youngest in the family if eight children. Before he enlisted with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, he trained as Baker, around 1911 he was living in Ormondville, Takapau, Hawkes Bay. He then moved to Auckland where he was a master Baker, he opened a Bakery at 86 Ponsonby Road, the building is still there today.

    Bert was wounded in action, at Gallipoli, on 16 May 1915 and then wounded in action (second occasion), 8 August 1915; transferred to England, and admitted to 3rd Western General Hospital, 27 September 1915; discharged to NZ Depot, 22 October 1915 [no further details recorded]. Commenced return to New Zealand on board SS 'Rotorua', 16 December 1915; discharged (medically unfit), 5 March 1916.
    War service: 1 year 200 days (of which 1 year 111 days was abroad). Shortly after returning he married, and had a daughter and son. He died on the 10th August 1930, aged 41 years, and his resting place is Waikumete Cemetery. Bert's Funeral was held at St Patrick's Cathederal, Auckland and it was told by his daughter that the Funeral cortege stretched the whole length of Queen Street and stopped all traffic enroute to Waikumete Cemetery.
