  • "Elder son of the Bishop of this diocese, was at School here from 1898, and left us to continue his studies in Wellington, where he proved himself a man of remarkable ability. He subsequently went home to Cambridge, and there gained the highest honours obtainable in both classics and history. He enlisted immediately the war broke out, when he was assistant master at Victoria College, Jersey, receiving his commission in the 9th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment, the following November. But for two brief periods when he was wounded he remained on active service up to the time of his death. He was awarded the M.C. for conspicuous gallantry in the Somme offensive, and was twice mentioned in despatches, the last occasion being in connection with the fighting before Cambrai with General Byng's army, when he and his orderly captured ten prisoners. He fell in action on March 21st, 1918." (In Memoriam, 1914-1918 [Wanganui Collegiate School]) AWMM
